The wine tasting event that had been scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2016 has been postponed. We will be back in Spring 2017.
We, like most people, expected different results in the recent Presidential election. So we were caught off-guard by the results. We had been in the middle of planning what should have been a celebration of historic proportions. After all, it’s not every day that one gets to see the first woman elected president win an election. I’m still hoping that I will get to see that day. But today, is not that day.
Instead of the woman we expected to become the next leader of the free world, our voters have made it possible for a man of questionable character and temperament to ascend to the highest office in the land. We will be hoping that President Trump’s agenda will be different than that of Candidate Trump. After all, Candidate Trump ran on a platform of hate and division.
One thing that I’ve noticed over the years is that presidents have a tougher time enacting their policies than what they imagined. I hope that this is also the case for President Trump. I suspect that many of the things that Candidate Trump asked for will be denied by our congress and senate. After all, all of our representatives and one third of our senators will be held to answer for their actions in just two years’ time.
So, the Placer County Latino Democratic Club will spend the next few days reflecting on this election, its results, and any lessons that need to be learned. But, come 2017, we will be back. There will be battles to fight on behalf of those who are not able to fight for themselves. Legislation will need to be vetted. Hate is once again being seen on our streets, in our neighborhoods, and in our cities. We must not allow it to prevail. Our immigrant forefathers worked too hard for us to sit idly by while history marches by.
Together we can!
