Observing the 4th of July

Today, we observe the 4th of July.

On this day we celebrate our Founding Fathers declaring themselves independent of a distant government that was imposing their ill will upon the people born on the American continent without fair representation.

Today, we are facing an adversarial Executive branch of our national government that has chosen to openly mock our Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This administration has chosen to create policy that favors the most privileged among us at the expense of the most vulnerable. Gone is any semblance of an America where we try to bring fairness and justice to everyone. Today, we are facing a government where your worth is based on your ability to hoard money.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

This nation is a nation of immigrants. Yet our President has chosen to unabashedly demonize the very people our Statue of Liberty dares to welcome. He has managed to raise unfounded fear in many otherwise rational people. We have seen fellow Americans mocked, attacked and harassed for nothing more than the ability to speak a second language and the desire to do so openly. We are watching the height of hypocrisy when our President ordered that children be torn from their parents, and now, having been ordered to reunite these families, is acknowledging their possible inability to do just that, all the while pandering to people who falsely espouse a belief in “family values.”

“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both.” – Eleanor Roosevelt.

Our constitution provides a balance of power by creating three separate, but equal, branches of government, one of those being the judicial branch. As I write this, our President is working to make our nation’s Supreme Court nothing but a rubber-stamp for his policies and the policies of a select few who work against the best interests of the American people.

Our nation is being challenged as it has not been challenged in a very long time. We are led by a president who doesn’t understand or respect the office he currently holds. He is enabled by a Congress that is unwilling to demand he execute his office with the allegiance demanded by the constitution.

Many have risen to this challenge. Over that last 18 months, we have seen many, many people stand up and fight to preserve the vision of the Founding Fathers. People who had never acted out in protest, were moved to step up and out to say “No” to our mis-directed President.

But we still have a long way to go. Many of our friends, family and neighbors have have chosen to believe the lies and hate coming from our president and our elected leaders. We can not let this dissuade us.
Truth is on our side.

We will continue to work for justice for ALL.
We will continue to welcome the immigrant.
We will continue to make our nation the last best hope of earth.

Defending DACA

Recently, Texas was in the news when they, and nine other states, chose to challenge DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). They will be pressing the Trump administration to rescind this executive order. Should DACA still be on the books on September 5, 2017, they have threatened to sue the federal government to have DACA canceled.

Know Your Rights Workshops in Placer County

Our friends at Placer People of Faith Together have sent us this notice:

To reduce some of the fear that immigrant community is facing around the recent ICE raids in Placer County, we have collaborated with an immigration attorney, Sara Bobbitt, from the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services to host two Know Your Rights Legal Workshops in the Auburn and Roseville area during the first week of February. The presentations will be focused on what to do to prepare for a raid, your rights when encountering ICE, and what to if you do get arrested. Flyers are attached within this e-mail (in Spanish). Please spread this information widely!

Sunday, February 7th at 1:30 PM at St. Rose Catholic Church in Roseville, California

These raids being conducted in our neighborhoods are tearing families apart and are NOT representing what our great nation is all about.
